The Netherland’s Demographic Nightmare

Once having 8 workers supporting each retiree in 1950, the Netherlands is projected to have closer to 2 by 2050. This is because, like many EU countries, the Netherland’s fertility rate has fallen below replacement levels since the 1970s, while, simultaneously, retirees are living increasingly longer [subscriber only: The EU Faces Serious Depopulation, Starting Now].

The Netherland’s Demographic Nightmare

The central problem is not only the falling ratio of workers to retirees, but the latter’s far higher cost to the Government [subscriber only: ‘The Alarming Cost of Aging Demographics’]. In 2023, 40% of the Dutch Government’s total expenditure on social protection went towards the category of ‘old age and survivors’ – mainly constituted by expensive pensions. This is leading to an unsustainable generational tax burden.
