Pakistan

Updated: January 2025

Key Insights
  • Data Quality
Pakistan’s GDP data is rated D, or poor, by World Economics and should therefore be used with caution. The population data is also rated D and therefore should be used with caution. Pakistan is also rated E grade on the Governance Index, meaning the Government is untrustworthy and that they may have interfered in the production of economic data. Hence, GDP size, growth and all demographic data are unreliable, as is all derived data such as GDP per capita.

  • Size and Growth of GDP
Pakistan is the world’s 23rd largest economy when using GDP data rated D or above by World Economics. This is calculated using Purchasing Power Parity data from the World Bank, including factoring in adjustments for out-of-date GDP base year data, and estimates of the size of Pakistan’s informal economy. It is the 10th largest economy in the Global South – again when using data rated D or above – and the 3rd largest in the Frontier Markets category. Considerable caution is necessary when using this data, however, as it is likely to be unreliable.

  • Vulnerability to Climate Change
Climate change will have a deleterious impact on Pakistan. The World Bank Group’s Country Climate and Development Report for Pakistan projects a possible 20% reduction in GDP by 2050. It has some of the poorest air quality globally. In the Asia-Pacific region only India and Afghanistan have poorer quality air on the World Economics Environmental Index. Its temperature is also an issue due to global warming and corresponding extreme weather. Catastrophic rain, linked to climate change, ravaged the agricultural sector in 2022, with flooding already estimated to have cost Pakistan’s economy £35 billion.

  • Poor Governance
Pakistan is rated E grade on the World Economics Governance Index and therefore has extremely poor governance. This is due to a weak rule of law, censorship and high corruption perceptions. World Economics has previously shown why good Governance is crucial for investors.

  • Debt
Pakistan’s debt-to-GDP ratio is high. Large, consecutive yearly deficits have created an increasing debt burden. Repayments are likely to start impacting the country’s budget, reducing the amount of money available to provide essential public services.

  • Demographics
Pakistan is experiencing a decline in its fertility rate which has fallen by a near 50% since 1970 to the present. It is currently at 3.6% and is therefore still above the replacement threshold.

POPULATION DATA QUALITY

The Population Data Quality Rating is derived from three factors: a country's latest Census Year; its Capacity for producing statistical data; and its Registration of Births data. Read more...

The three components are weighted to form the Population Data Quality Index.
